Annual event celebrating the life of Academy Award winner and Brookings resident Elmo Williams, producer, director, editor and writer of many Hollywood classic movies, including "High Noon", "Tora! Tora! Tora!", "The Longest Yard", and "20,000 Leagues under the Sea".
Since its official proclamation in 2017, the fourth Sunday in April has been designated as “Elmo Williams Day” in Brookings. Williams is Brookings own Hollywood celebrity, having won two academy awards. This year it will be celebrated on Sunday, April 30, starting with a tribute to Williams at “High Noon” at the Capella by the Sea in Azalea Park. It will be followed by one of his best-known movies, Walt Disney’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”, co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library and shown at the Chetco Community Public Library in Brookings at 2 pm with snacks provided. It stars James Mason, Kirk Douglas, and Peter Lorre. There is no charge for either event.
